Introduction

Imagine opening boxes that had remained closed for nearly 70 years and discovering thousands of pieces of history inside. The recent Rajghat discovery in Varanasi revealed more than 10,000 ancient artefacts hidden inside 22 forgotten boxes connected with the historic Rajghat excavation.

The boxes were opened in August 2026 at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi, India. Inside, researchers found ancient pottery, coins, seals, sculptures, tools and many other objects, along with thousands of old photographs and negatives. The discovery has created new interest in the archaeology of Rajghat and ancient Varanasi.

Where Were the 70-Year-Old Boxes Found?

The 70-year-old boxes had been stored at the museum of the Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology at Banaras Hindu University.

The archaeological material inside came from the Rajghat archaeological site, located near the meeting point of the Ganga and Varuna rivers in Varanasi. The objects were connected with the Rajghat excavation, which began in 1957.

Although many discoveries from Rajghat were studied over the years, these 22 boxes remained unopened for decades.

What Was Found Inside the 22 Boxes?

When researchers finally opened the boxes, they found more than 10,000 ancient artefacts.

The collection included:

  • Ancient pottery and pottery fragments
  • Coins
  • Sculptures
  • Tools
  • Stamp seals
  • Copper objects
  • Ivory artefacts
  • Bone objects
  • Animal figurines

Some seals contain inscriptions connected with the Brahmi script, while painted black pottery in the collection may be nearly 3,000 years old. These discoveries could provide new information about the people who lived in the region across different historical periods.

Thousands of Historical Photographs Were Also Found

The boxes contained more than ancient treasures.

Researchers also found around 3,000 glass slides and more than 5,000 photographic negatives documenting archaeological sites and historical monuments across India, including Rajghat, Ajanta, Ellora, Manjhi and Ratnagiri.

These photographs are important because they may preserve images of archaeological sites and sculptures before later weathering, restoration and modern development changed their appearance.

Why Is the Rajghat Archaeological Site Important?

The Rajghat archaeological site is an important source for understanding the long history of the Middle Ganga Valley.

Archaeologists have identified several cultural periods at Rajghat, beginning around 800 BC and continuing into the medieval period. The site is also closely connected with the history of ancient Varanasi.

Major excavations took place between 1957 and 1969, and the newly opened boxes are part of this important archaeological archive.

Why Does the Rajghat Discovery Matter?

The Rajghat discovery is unusual because these were not newly excavated treasures. The objects had already been recovered decades ago but remained largely hidden inside museum storage.

The 22 boxes are now giving researchers another opportunity to study ancient artefacts in Varanasi using modern conservation and research methods. Specialists will need to identify, document and preserve thousands of objects, a process that could take years.

This is an important reminder that major discoveries in ancient India archaeology do not always come from digging into the ground. Sometimes, history is already waiting inside a forgotten collection.

A Forgotten Collection Returns to Light

The numbers behind this discovery are remarkable:

22 boxes

More than 10,000 ancient artefacts

Around 3,000 glass slides

More than 5,000 photographic negatives

For nearly 70 years, these boxes remained closed.

Today, the Rajghat discovery has opened a new chapter in the study of the Rajghat archaeological site and the history of ancient Varanasi. Researchers have only begun examining the collection, meaning some of its most important secrets may still be waiting to be discovered.
